Professor T. Anthony Jones 

United States

A professor of sociology at Northeastern University, he has written extensively on Soviet/Russian and East European social, political, and economic afairs, and previously taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and at the University of Leicester (UK). He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Club of Madrid, is on the Board of Advisors of FRIDE Fundacion in Spain, and edits two journals.

  
He was educated Princeton University (Ph.D 1978, M.A. 1972), Brown University (M.A. 1970), and the University of Leicester, England(B.A. 1968). Previous appointments include Assistant Professor and Associate Chair, Department of Sociology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Research Staff, M.I.T.; Lecturer in Sociology, University of Leicester (England). He was formerly President of Cambridge East-West Consulting Group, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Published works include studies of Soviet society, social problems in Russia, business organization in the USSR/Russia, Russian/Soviet economic thought, Russian/Soviet education, workers and occupational change, technology and social organization in the USSR/Russia, Russian/Soviet private enterprise, and developments in post-Communist Central and Eastern Europe. He is currently working on books on Putin's Russia, and on Patterns of Political Change in Post-Communist Systems. His publications include Education and Society in the New Russia, ed. (M.E. Sharpe, 1994) In Search of Pluralism, ed. with C. Saivetz (Westview Press, 1994) KO-OPS: The Rebirth of Entrepreneurship in the Soviet Union, with W. Moskoff (Indiana University Press, 1991). Soviet Update 1989-1990, ed. with D. Powell (Westview, 1991). Professions and the State: Expertise and Autonomy in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, ed. (Temple University Press, 1991). The Great Market Debate in Soviet Economics, ed. with W. Moskoff (M.E. Sharpe, 1991). Soviet Social Problems, ed. with W. Connor and D. Powell (Westview Press, 1991) Perestroika and the Economy, ed. with W. Moskoff (M.E. Sharpe, 1989). He is the editor of the monthly translation journals Russian Education And Society, and Sociological Research. From 1987 through 1992 he taught courses on management to enterprise directors and to newly-emerging entrepreneurs in Moscow, Syktivkar, and Pechora. In 1992 he was a visiting professor at Moscow State University.
