Professor Andrew Graham

A distinguished economist, Andrew Graham is Master of Balliol College, Oxford University. He read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, in 1964 before working, successively, for the National Economic Development Office, the Department of Economic Affairs and the Cabinet Office. He was economic adviser to the Prime Minister, before being appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship in Economics at Balliol in 1969.

From 1974 until 1976 he was policy adviser to the Prime Minister, and from 1988 to 1994 he combined his work at Balliol with being economic adviser to John Smith, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the Labour Party. He was appointed Master of Balliol College in 2001.

In 2000 he initiated and led a University and Balliol plan to establish the Oxford Internet Institute, which he founded in 2001. He has been a Board Member of Channel 4 Television, and a Trustee of the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. He is currently a member of the Scott Trust, which owns the Guardian and the Observer newspapers. He is the son of the late Winston Graham, the well-known English author, and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Civil Law by Oxford University in 2003.
