Anthony Jones was a contributor and discussion group leader at the conference organized by the World Political Forum in Turin, Italy, on 4-6 March 2005 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of perestroika.
Chaired by Mikhail Gorbachev, “1985-2005: Twenty Years that Changed the World” brought together some of the people who worked with him to implement the policy of perestroika, political leaders from Eastern Europe who were involved in the changes in that region, political leaders from other countries, and academic experts on the socialists societies of the time.
An especially poignant moment occurred when the Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko read aloud his poem on Gorbachev and perestroika. The papers and debates from the conference have been published in a book (1985-2005: Twenty Years that Changed the World) that is available from the World Political Forum.
