Before his trip to the US M.S. Gorbachev went to London for three days where
he spoke at two conferences, gave several interviews to the media as well as met
Mrs. Margaret Thatcher and congratulated her on her 80th birthday.
Gorbachev’s program in the US was busy as usual. During his 10-day stay he
visited seven cities, made presentations at five universities, gave several
press conferences and interviews to the representatives of the press and
electronic media.
The central event in his visit to the US was a function in Washington, D.C.,
devoted to the 20th anniversary of the beginning of perestroika. It was
initiated by several non-governmental organizations, like the ”Frank” Foundation
to Assist Children and the Washington Chamber of Commerce. Invited to the
function were prominent figures in US politics, business and culture. In his
address to the participants in the function M.S. Gorbachev centered his
attention at the changes that took place in the world in recent years. His main
message was the impossibility to live in the new, global world relying on the
old confrontationist approaches. It is necessary to have a new thinking in the
new century. Other speakers supported this idea. These were former US President
Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, the founder of the CNN Ted
Turner, and the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Betty Williams.
Regional and national media (in particular the Associated Press, CNN and
C-Span television channels) provided a broad coverage of M.S. Gorbachev’s
presentations in the US universities: the Miami University (Ohio), the Eastern
Central University (Oklahoma), the Pacific University School of Law
(California), the Kansas State University, and Bethany College (Kansas). The
synopses of these presentations will be place on our Web site.
